When the pulp of a tooth dies or becomes irreversibly inflamed a root canal may be needed. During the procedure of a root canal the pulp of the tooth is removed. After the pulp is removed the hollow canals are then cleaned and refilled with a filling material called gutta percha. Before the procedure, the area is numbed which makes the procedure painless. Doing root canals can help save a tooth that was once infected.
